Scotland’s national coalition for active communication of children’s movement behaviours
Changing the conversation. Changing childhood. Changing Scotland.
Scotland’s children and young people are not moving enough. Physical activity levels remain too low, screen time has increased, sleep is under pressure, and inequalities are widening. The consequences are already visible: poorer fitness, rising obesity, worsening mental health, reduced readiness to learn, and growing gaps between children with the most and least opportunity. But this is not simply a problem of individual motivation.
Children’s movement is shaped by adults: parents, carers, schools, planners, health professionals, policymakers, funders, technology companies, transport systems and community organisations. Children do not decide whether streets are safe, whether play is protected, whether schools have time and space for movement, or whether public messages help families understand what children need.

Scotland Moves exists to change that.
We are building a national coalition to improve movement behaviours for children and young people from birth to 18. Convened by the University of Strathclyde and Inspiring Scotland, Scotland Moves will act as the coordinating body for a growing network of researchers, charities, practitioners, policymakers, communities and children themselves.
Our role is not to replace the excellent work already happening across Scotland. Our role is to connect it, strengthen it, and give it a clear national voice.
Scotland does not need another short-term campaign. It needs long-term national communication and messaging infrastructure. Scotland Moves will coordinate that infrastructure.
